Navigating the Mental Health System

Time:  6.00 pm – 8.30 pm

Frequency:  24 June, 26 August and 28 October 2021

There have been a number of changes in mental health services over the last two years and it can be confusing for families and whānau to know what is available, how to access them and what to expect.

Yellow Brick Road Nelson is pleased to provide an opportunity to take some of the confusion out of navigating services. We are hosting a series of three information evenings where representatives of some NMDHB and community mental health and addiction services will talk about their services and answer your questions. The evenings will be held on 24 June, 26 August and 28 October.

All families and whānau who are supporting a loved one with lived experience of mental health services are warmly invited. The discussion will be followed by a light supper and opportunity to connect with other families and whānau.

The first discussion will be on 24 June 2021 at 6pm. Guest speakers are:

  • Hilma Shriving, Clinical Educator MH&A Acute Support. Hilma will talk about recent changes in mental health care in Nelson and Wairau Emergency Departments.
  • Sarah Allen, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Wahi Oranga (Nelson Mental Health Unit): Sarah will introduce some of the initiatives currently happening on the ward eg. Person-centred care, sensory modulation, activities, etc
  • Susan Murray, Support Services Coordinator from NMDHB: Susan will outline the range of support services that people under the care of Mental Health and Addictions services may be eligible for and how to access them.
